kungifu
INTRO
Thank you for you interest in kungifu (pronounced "kung eye eff you").
kungifu was produced by Adam S. Bolton (MIT -> CfA -> IfA -> UU)
and Scott Burles (MIT -> D.E. Shaw).
kungifu is a set of IDL software routines designed
for the calibration and reduction of fiber-fed
integral-field unit (IFU) astronomical spectroscopy.
kungifu is an unsupported product,
written by IDL hackers for IDL hackers.
If you have no IDL experience, you will probably have
to learn as much about IDL as about integral-field
spectroscopy in order to get results.
kungifu currently allows (do not read "supports")
the reduction of IFU data obtained in one of the following
formats:
IMACS f/2 N&S, 1x1 binning
IMACS f/4 N&S, 1x1 binning
GMOS-N "2-slit", 2x1 binning
If you have data in another format, you may be able to
modify the codes and/or parameter files in order to
reduce that data. New modes will be implemented by
ASB according to his perceived self interest.
kungifu IN A NUTSHELL
- kungifu performs optimal extraction of IFU data.
- kungifu allows relative and absolute wavelength calibration
to within a few hundredths of a pixel (for unbinned data)
across 1200-2000 fibers.
- kungifu does nearly Poisson-limited sky subtraction, even in
the I band.
- kungifu can rebin in wavelength, but doesn't need to.
- kungifu is not an automated pipeline, though a pipeline for a
fixed data format could probably be built using kungifu.
REQUIREMENTS
In order to use kungifu, you must have the following:
- A machine running IDL, preferably not over the network,
since displaying images can be sluggish. Should be a
UNIX platform, otherwise system calls to gzip will fail.
- The Princeton IDLUTILS and IDLSPEC2D packages installed:
http://spectro.princeton.edu/idlspec2d_install.html
- At least 1GB of RAM (recommended)
- Science data in one of the above data formats.
- Spectroscopic arcs and flats in the same format.
- Enough disk space for your uncompressed raw data to expand
in place by a factor of 4 (conservatively).
DOWNLOADING AND CONDITIONS OF USE
By downloading and/or using kungifu, you agree to the
conditions of use. These are described on the
Conditions of Use page.
Links to download the software and associated demo data are
found at the bottom of that page.
OBSERVING RECOMMENDATIONS
If you have not yet gone observing, the following are recommended
to give you the best reduced data product:
- At least one spectroscopic arc and flat at altitude
after each unique science pointing.
- A series of at least 5 spectro flats, preferably taken in
immediate succession, in each unique instrument configuration.
- If binning is employed, a set of un-binned calibration frames
to go along with the binned calibration frames (not explicitly
used yet, but probably a good idea).
- For IMACS: use SLOW READOUT of the CCDs, unless you are observing
something obscenely bright. Readnoise will kill you otherwise.
FURTHER INFORMATION
Further information on kungifu and its usage can be found in
the file README.txt in the doc directory of the distribution,
and in the following refereed publication:
